Legendary ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dead at 77

August 18th, 2026

Legendary ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard died. He was 77.

The Fort Bend County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Beard's death to Fox News Digital. Circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately available.

Beard was in hospice care when he died Tuesday at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with family members at his side, his publicist confirmed to The Associated Press.

"Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top," Billy F. Gibbons shared on Instagram Tuesday.

The band also announced that following Beard's passing, upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs would be canceled.

"The band will resume its current The Big One!

Tour this weekend with two dates in at Austin City Limits, one of Frank’s favorite venues and in a city that had been something of a second home for him," they wrote.

Fox News Digital previously reported that Beard was battling serious health issues, forcing the rock band to make tour changes.

"Shelter Music Group, ZZ Top’s management, has announced the band’s drummer, Mr. Frank Beard, has temporarily stepped away from the current tour to attend a health issue requiring his focus in the near term," the band said in 2025 when Beard had to step away from their Elevation Tour.

ZZ Top sold more than 50 million records and had six singles that reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Seven of their albums have been in the Billboard 200’s Top 10 and they earned three Grammy Award nominations.

"I’ve found the people I was meant to play with," Beard said in the 2019 documentary "ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas."

"I never wanted to quit, and never wanted to get fired."
