Urban Meyer Makes Decision on Coaching Future

October 19th, 2023

Appearing at the Knoxville Quarterback Club on Monday, Urban Meyer, the former head coach for several programs — including Ohio State, Florida, Utah and the Jacksonville Jaguars — was asked about his coaching future.

Simply put, the 59-year-old said he had "no desire" to do so.

Meyer has been with Fox Sports as an analyst. He has not coached football since 2021 and hasn't been in college since 2018. He's been the subject of many coaching rumors, most recently linked to the Michigan State Spartans following the dismissal of former head coach Mel Tucker over sexual misconduct allegations.

In fact, after these comments surfaced, a number of Michigan State fans said they weren't buying what Meyer was trying to sell here.

"The fact that rumors of him being in East Lansing are pretty much fact at this point makes me believe Urban is fibbing here," one user wrote.

Others added comments such as, "Urban to MSU is a lock. Calling it now" and "Y'all actually believe this? Lol"

"I am good," Meyer said. "I never really took a day off. People, when I say that, they scratch their head. I am like I never took a day off. I had some health stuff go on.

I became addicted to sleeping pills. I was just a maniac worker. ... So no. No desire."

Meyer's colleague Bruce Feldman, who also works for Fox Sports, confirmed earlier this month that Meyer has no interest in the job.

Throughout his run as a head coach in college, he enjoyed plenty of success, winning a national championship at Florida and at Ohio State. However, his stint in Jacksonville didn't even last the entire season.

"It has never been harder I am telling you right now," Meyer said. "Every coach, every player has an agent. Think about that. Remember those days? Maybe a coordinator every once in a while had an agent. There is nothing wrong with agents. They're great.

"But when I am the head coach having to deal with a high school player that (says) meet with my agent first. I am going I want to meet with your family because you are talking about recruiting and other stuff."
