Arthur Schopenhauer: The Art of Being Right

2025

Synopsis

Arthur Schopenhauer’s The Art of Being Right (also known as Eristic Dialectic) is a biting, practical, and somewhat cynical treatise on the nature of human dispute. Rather than focusing on the discovery of objective truth—the traditional goal of logic—Schopenhauer explores "dialectic," or the art of disputation aimed solely at prevailing in an argument. He begins with the premise that human vanity and the innate desire to be right often override the pursuit of truth, leading individuals to defend a position even after they realize it is flawed. Consequently, the book serves as both a manual for winning debates and a defensive guide to identifying the dishonest stratagems used by others.

The core of the work consists of 38 specific "stratagems" designed to outmaneuver an opponent regardless of the actual merits of the case. These tactics range from subtle logical maneuvers, such as generalizing an opponent’s specific statement to make it easier to attack, to more aggressive psychological ploys like intentionally provoking anger to cloud the opponent's judgment. Schopenhauer also details more desperate measures, such as the argumentum ad personam, which involves abandoning the topic altogether to launch a personal attack when one is clearly losing the debate.

Ultimately, the book functions as a satirical yet deeply observant commentary on intellectual dishonesty. By codifying these "tricks," Schopenhauer exposes the reality of how discourse often functions in social and professional spheres. He concludes that because most people are driven by stubbornness and a lack of insight, true philosophical debate is rare. Therefore, the "art of being right" becomes a necessary tool for survival in a world where the loudest or most clever voice frequently triumphs over the most accurate one.
