A Pause in the Azores

2014

Synopsis

Be transported back in time with ex-pat Bob Silverman to an island in the Azores. In 1974, he and his wife disregarded family advice, gave up their jobs and sailed across the North Atlantic seeking adventure in a 37-foot sailboat named Daemon.

They discovered Faial where the land was mostly worked by hand, pre-World War II vehicles ambled about on cobblestone roads, houses were seldom locked, families were extremely cohesive with children always acting respectfully toward their elders, and television at that time was prohibited. Moreover, the islanders were overwhelming in their generosity.

Before they knew it, the Silvermans fell in love with a house with an incredible view and paused for 10 years before continuing on their journey on the sea. This memoir describes their experience and the realization that people in faraway places are really not so dissimilar from us.
