The Golden Decade: A Complete Story of How the San Francisco Bay Area Reached the Pinnacle of American Sports

2020

Synopsis

Since the onset of the Gold Rush in 1848, the San Francisco Bay Area has served as a destination for new beginnings. One of the nation’s earliest breeding grounds for social justice movements and home to the technology capital of the world in the Silicon Valley, the Bay has long been a place where citizens are encouraged to challenge the limits of possibility.

After over 150 years of redefining the standards of progressive politics, innovation, and cultural heterogeneity, the Bay Area turned its enterprising eye towards one of the only major sectors that had eluded its rise to national distinction—the arena of professional sports. There had been flashes over the decades, from the Swingin’ A’s in the early ‘70s to the fabled 49er dynasty during the ‘80s and ‘90s. But entering the 21st century, the Bay Area had yet to make a unified assertion of dominance to put itself at the forefront of the sports world.

Beginning in 2010, three teams—the San Francisco Giants, the Golden State Warriors, and the San Francisco 49ers—would take it upon themselves to change that narrative. Channeling the intrinsic diversity, ingenuity, and resilience that had long defined the Bay Area community, they orchestrated an unprecedented run of success over the next ten years, one that staked the region’s claim as the country’s preeminent Titletown.
