Carbon Race: Mining Atmospheric Carbon for Graphene Production

2023

Synopsis

Graphene has been hailed as a wonder material that could revolutionize many industries, from electronics to aerospace. However, the current methods of producing graphene rely heavily on mined graphite, a finite resource that is primarily found in China. As the demand for graphene grows, there is a growing concern about the environmental impact of mining graphite and the potential scarcity of this critical resource.

An alternative approach to producing graphene is by extracting carbon directly from the atmosphere. This process, known as direct air capture (DAC), is still in its early stages but holds great potential. By capturing carbon from the atmosphere and converting it into graphene, we could create a sustainable source of this material that doesn't rely on mining and reduces carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

The Graphene Revolution: The Weird Science of the Ultra-Thin

In 2003, Russian physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov found a way to produce graphene - the thinnest substance in the world - by using sticky tape to separate an atom-thick layer from a block of graphite. Their efforts would win the 2010 Nobel Prize for Physics, and now the applications of...
