Synopsis

"Of Helicopters and Heroes" is a memoir by Gary Michael Bowman, a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot who served during the Vietnam War. The book provides a firsthand account of Bowman's experiences in Vietnam, as well as his struggles with PTSD after returning home.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on Bowman's experiences in Vietnam, where he flew Huey helicopters for the 170th Assault Helicopter Company. He describes his missions, which included transporting troops and supplies, providing air support, and rescuing wounded soldiers. Bowman also writes about the challenges of flying in Vietnam's harsh terrain and hostile conditions, as well as the camaraderie and close bonds he formed with his fellow soldiers.

The second part of the book deals with Bowman's struggle with PTSD after returning home from the war. He writes candidly about his difficulty adjusting to civilian life, his battles with addiction, and his eventual recovery through therapy and the support of his family and friends.

Throughout the book, Bowman emphasizes the importance of the bonds between soldiers and the need for society to support veterans as they transition back to civilian life. He also pays tribute to the many soldiers he served with who did not make it home.

Overall, "Of Helicopters and Heroes" is a moving and powerful memoir that provides a firsthand account of the Vietnam War and its aftermath. It is a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who served in the war and a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by veterans returning from combat.
