Pentecost in Tulsa: The Revivals and Race Massacre that Shaped the Pentecostal Movement in Tulsa

2021

Synopsis

Pentecost in Tulsa tells the story of how Tulsa became one of the most important centers for Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity in the United States. In its earliest days, Tulsa saw waves of revival from several well-known Pentecostal revivalists like Aimee Semple McPherson and Raymond T. Richey who established many of Tulsa’s Pentecostal churches. Later, Tulsa became the home for some of the best-known healing evangelists like Oral Roberts and T.L. Osborn. Equally important is the story of the resilient black Pentecostal community that endured the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and yet, helped revive the famous Greenwood District. Through these triumphs and tragedies, the city has emerged as a unique and important part of the story of Pentecostalism.
