The Population Bomb

1968

Synopsis

The Population Bomb, published in 1968 by Stanford University professor Paul R. Ehrlich and his wife Anne Ehrlich (though credited solely to Paul upon initial release), is a seminal work warning of the catastrophic dangers of global overpopulation. Ehrlich argues that the earth's human population was growing exponentially at a rate that far outstripped the global food supply and natural resources. He posited that without immediate intervention to curb growth, the planet was headed toward massive widespread famines, societal collapse, and severe ecological degradation in the 1970s and 1980s.

The book details the dire consequences Ehrlich envisioned if population growth remained unchecked, ranging from international conflict and economic failure to irreversible environmental destruction. To avoid these outcomes, he advocated for aggressive population control measures, including global birth control initiatives, financial incentives, and even tax policies designed to penalize large families. While many of the book's specific, apocalyptic predictions failed to materialize—largely due to unexpected advancements in agricultural technology known as the Green Revolution—The Population Bomb catalyzed intense global debate and significantly shaped modern environmental awareness and demographic policy.
