Honus Wagner: The Life of Baseball's "Flying Dutchman"

1996

Synopsis

Arthur D. Hittner's biography "Honus Wagner: The Life of Baseball's 'Flying Dutchman'" offers a detailed, thoroughly researched portrait of Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner, one of baseball's earliest and greatest superstars. Drawing on contemporary newspaper accounts, family scrapbooks and correspondence, as well as Wagner's own personal vestpocket notebooks, the book traces his journey from humble beginnings as the son of German immigrants in Chartiers (now part of Carnegie), Pennsylvania, through his rise in professional baseball.

Wagner joined the Louisville Colonels in 1897 before spending the bulk of his 21-year major league career (1897–1917) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hittner chronicles Wagner's extraordinary on-field dominance as a shortstop who redefined the position with his exceptional range, arm strength, and instincts, while at the plate he captured eight National League batting titles, led the league six times in slugging percentage, and five times in stolen bases. Known for his bowlegged, barrel-chested build and deceptively graceful "Flying Dutchman" speed, Wagner became baseball's first true superstar and was among the original inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

Beyond the statistics and highlights, the narrative explores Wagner's off-field life, including his personality, family ties, post-playing career as a coach and mentor, and his enduring legacy as a modest, hardworking figure who shunned the spotlight even as his fame grew. The revised edition updates and expands on this foundational work, presenting a balanced, engaging account that captures both the golden age of baseball and the man who helped define it.
