Synopsis

Did Thomas Crapper Really Invent the Toilet?: The Inventions That Changed Our Homes and Our Lives by Catherine O'Reilly is a lighthearted, curiosity-driven exploration of the everyday objects and appliances that define modern domestic life. The book uncovers the surprisingly complex, quirky, and often unexpected histories behind familiar household items—ranging from kitchen appliances like blenders and toasters to personal care products like deodorant, as well as essential innovations like the electric blanket and fire extinguisher.

Addressing the central question of its title, O'Reilly dismantles common urban legends and historical misconceptions. She clarifies that while Thomas Crapper was indeed a prominent 19th-century English plumber who made significant contributions to sanitary plumbing and popularized the flush toilet, he did not actually invent it; the mechanism had been patented decades earlier by Sir John Harington and Alexander Cumming. Throughout the text, O'Reilly shifts the spotlight away from persistent myths to celebrate the true, often overlooked inventors and accidental breakthroughs that transformed raw convenience into the modern comforts of home.
