Synopsis

The Search for DB Cooper: How We Cracked the Case and Why Some People Don't Want it Solved, written by publisher and author Vern Jones and released in 2022, chronicles an independent investigation into the legendary 1971 skyjacking of Flight 305. The book focuses on the findings of Carl Laurin, a friend of skydiver Walter R. Reca, who believed Reca was the infamous criminal. Jones outlines how a team of private investigators compiled eyewitness accounts, audio confessions, and circumstantial evidence detailing Reca's alleged jump into the stormy night over Washington State and his subsequent encounter with a local motorist near Cle Elum.

Beyond putting forward Reca as the suspect, the narrative addresses the deep skepticism, public resistance, and institutional pushback that met their claims. Jones explores the complexities of working with government agencies and intelligence communities, arguing that systemic inertia and competing interests prevent official bodies from accepting alternative theories to famous cold cases. Ultimately, the text serves as a defense of Laurin’s decades-long search for the truth, framing the case as solved while highlighting why the broader public and authorities remain hesitant to close the book on the mystery.
